Custom Ear Impressions, Hearing Protection, Swim and Sleep Plugs
Here at Highland Hears, we wanted to go the extra mile and offer a speciality service that seemed to be lacking in Inverness, especially with most Audiologists tending to primarily focus on hearing aids.
At Highland Hears, we do not deal with hearing aids so we felt it was a great opportunity to specialise in bespoke hearing protection for all sorts of day to day hobbies and work related hearing hazards. We can now offer a range of ear protection devices which are made bespoke for you.
In our clinic, located on the outskirts of Inverness, we provide wax removal for patients, and are surprised to see narrow or deviated ear canals often with one side differing in shape and size to the other. Some ear canals make it difficult for water to escape and potentially leading to bacterial/fungal growth in the ear which is a problem for swimmers. This can also create a healing response in the ear, creating lots more wax!
Often, this type of patient will complain that over the counter ear plugs are uncomfortable, tend to fall out or one side doesn’t fit as well as the other. This is why, our devices made especially for you come from not one, but two sets of ear impression moulds to ensures the laboratory can create the most accurate and comfortable fitting device possible bespoke to your ears.

Ear Impressions
Frequently Asked Questions
We understand how important it is to protect your hearing, especially when investing in custom earplugs, or other tailored hearing solutions. Here’s everything you need to know about our ear impression service.
Are Ear Impressions Safe?
Yes. Anyone taking ear impressions must be qualified and insured to ensure the process is carried out correctly and, more importantly, safely. Our staff are fully qualified, insured, and use the latest equipment and high-grade impression materials.
Why Would I Need Them?
Ear impressions are essential for any custom fitted hearing product, whether you’re a musician, sports person, work in noisy environments, desire a peaceful night sleep or simply looking for a better fit and seal.
How Much Does It Cost?
Prices start from £60
Can You Still Take My Impressions If I'm Not Buying Ear Plugs From You?
Yes. We’re happy to take ear impressions for use with any manufacturer.
Price for this is £80 for one or both ears.
How Long Does It Take?
Each appointment typically takes no more than 30 minutes.
What’s the Process?
- We will examine your ears for wax or other obstructions.
- A small foam block is inserted to protect your eardrum.
- Soft silicone impression material is gently injected into your ear canal.
- After 5–10 minutes, the material sets and is safely removed.
- Another set of impressions is then taken in order to ensure the best possible fitting product.
- You’re all done!
If wax is present and removal is necessary, Microsuction wax removal can be undertaken in clinic however if the wax is too hard, an additional appointment will be necessary. Ear Impressions cannot be taken if there is excess wax.
If this is the case, an appointment fee of £35 will be charged and a follow up Microsuction appointment booked.
Microsuction appointment fee is £45 for one ear, £60 for both per appointment.
Can Anyone Have Ear Impressions Taken?
Technically yes but we only work on individuals age 16 and above, as younger ears may still be growing. Contact us if you’re unsure.
What Makes a Bad Impression?
A poor impression may lack essential detail, leading to:
- Delays or rejection by the manufacturer.
- Faulty products — poor fit, no seal and discomfort
At Highland Hears, we never send substandard impressions to manufacturers.
Already Have Custom Moulds — Can They Be Reused?
Unfortunately not. New custom products require new impressions, even if you already have moulded items.
I Already Have Impressions — Can I Use Them?
Yes, as long as they’re under 6 months old and meet our necessary quality standards. We're happy to assess your existing impressions for free and order a custom product for you in clinic.
