Frequently Asked Questions

We understand how important it is to protect your hearing, especially when investing in custom earplugs, or other tailored hearing solutions. Here’s everything you need to know about our ear impression service.

Are Ear Impressions Safe?

Yes. Anyone taking ear impressions must be qualified and insured to ensure the process is carried out correctly and, more importantly, safely. Our staff are fully qualified, insured, and use the latest equipment and high-grade impression materials.

Why Would I Need Them?

Ear impressions are essential for any custom fitted hearing product, whether you’re a musician, sports person, work in noisy environments, desire a peaceful night sleep or simply looking for a better fit and seal.

How Much Does It Cost?

Prices start from £60

Can You Still Take My Impressions If I'm Not Buying Ear Plugs From You?

Yes. We’re happy to take ear impressions for use with any manufacturer.

Price for this is £70 for one or both ears.

How Long Does It Take?

Each appointment typically takes no more than 30 minutes.

What’s the Process?

  1. We will examine your ears for wax or other obstructions.
  2. A small foam block is inserted to protect your eardrum.
  3. Soft silicone impression material is gently injected into your ear canal.
  4. After 15–20 minutes, the material sets and is safely removed.
  5. You’re all done!

If wax is present and removal is necessary, Microsuction wax removal can be undertaken in clinic however if the wax is too hard, an additional appointment will be necessary. Ear Impressions cannot be taken if there is excess wax.

If this is the case, an appointment fee of £35 will be charged and the remainder due following a follow up Microsuction appointment (£10 for one ear, £25 for both).

If a further Microsuction appointment is needed, the fee is £45 for one ear, £60 for both.

Can Anyone Have Ear Impressions Taken?

Technically yes but we only work on individuals age 16 and above, as younger ears may still be growing. Contact us if you’re unsure.

What Makes a Bad Impression?

A poor impression may lack essential detail, leading to:

  1. Delays or rejection by the manufacturer.
  2. Faulty products — poor fit, no seal and discomfort

At Highland Hears, we never send substandard impressions to manufacturers.

Can I Use a Self-Impression Kit?

We strongly advise against it. DIY kits can’t match the accuracy and safety of a professional impression. Mistakes can lead to wasted money and an ill-fitting product.

Can I Use Blu Tack?

No. While a humorous video might show someone making ear impressions from Blu Tack, it’s not safe, hygienic, or effective!

Already Have Custom Moulds — Can They Be Reused?

Unfortunately not. New custom products require new impressions, even if you already have moulded items.

I Already Have Impressions — Can I Use Them?

Yes, as long as they’re under 6 months old and meet our necessary quality standards. We're happy to assess your existing impressions for free and order a custom product for you in clinic.
